Many questions arise in connection with a hospital stay. Some arise before your admission, others during your stay, and some may even arise afterwards, once you are back home. That is why we have tried to compile answers to the most frequently asked questions for you – from A for ‘admission’ to Z for ‘central patient management’.

We have prepared a checklist for you to help you prepare for your stay at our hospitals in Husum, Niebüll and Wyk auf Föhr. Please feel free to use our contact form for any queries, suggestions or criticism.

The Klinikum Nordfriesland is an academic teaching hospital affiliated with the medical faculty of the University of Hamburg. Medical students are therefore trained in theory and practice at the clinics. In addition, our clinic is an academic teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Lübeck. Students of midwifery receive practical training at our clinic in Husum.
An accompanying person may be brought along for a fee. Please discuss this with the admitting doctor. Information about the costs of accommodation can be obtained from the patient admissions department or from the ‘Central Patient Management (ZPM)’ department at the Husum Clinic.

When you are admitted for inpatient treatment, please be sure to bring the following with you: the referral from your GP, your insurance card, any findings and X-ray images relating to your current case, a list of your medications, your identity card and, if applicable, your living will. You can find further tips in our checklist for preparing for a hospital stay.
Books from various fields of literature are available for you to read at the clinic. The nursing staff will be happy to assist you.
A broadcasting system is also integrated into the telephone and television system. You can choose between several radio stations. You can listen to the sound for the respective programme via the headphones at your bedside.
Please only bring small amounts of cash with you for inpatient stays. Please also do not bring any valuables or jewellery with you to the hospital.

There is a cash machine in the entrance area of the Husum Clinic.
At the Husum Clinic, a play area for younger visitors has been set up on the ground floor in the waiting area of the clinic's emergency room.
Those insured under statutory health insurance are required by law to pay a co-payment for hospital care for a maximum of 28 calendar days per year. This is invoiced by the clinic and settled with the health insurance company. Currently, this co-payment amounts to £10 per calendar day.

In case of doubt, the patient admissions department or the ‘Central Patient Management ZPM’ at the Husum Clinic will be happy to inform you whether the co-payment regulation applies to you. We request that you provide proof of any co-payments already made in the current year.
The respective clinics will handle the processing with the responsible health insurance fund.
If you have any suggestions for improvement, praise or criticism, please contact our hospital's ideas and complaints management team by telephone on 04841 660-1451 (answering machine). You will also find evaluation forms on each ward (Your opinion – our opportunity). We would be delighted if you could fill these in and post them in the letterboxes provided. All clinic employees are obliged to treat personal data collected in your patient file during the course of your treatment as strictly confidential. Due to professional confidentiality and data protection, you as a patient enjoy the confidentiality to which you are entitled. Only co-treating doctors and your general practitioner and/or specialist will receive the diagnostic and therapeutic information necessary for your treatment.
Coffee, tea and mineral water are provided free of charge by the clinic. Other drinks are available in Husum and Niebüll at the respective kiosk/café of the Husum and Niebüll clinics.
The fees for general hospital services can vary greatly between clinics. Essentially, flat-rate fees (known as DRG, or Diagnosis Related Groups) are billed to health insurance companies. However, other billing rates also apply, including additional fees, fees for pre- and post-hospitalisation treatment, outpatient surgery and other individual agreements with health insurance companies. The currently valid fee schedule can be viewed at any time in the patient admissions offices of the clinics or in the Central Patient Management Office (ZPM) (Husum Clinic).
For safety reasons, lighting candles or other open flames is expressly prohibited in the clinics and medical centres of the hospital.
There is also a general ban on smoking in all buildings of the Nordfriesland Hospital and on the hospital grounds, which also applies to e-cigarettes.
Smoking is only permitted in designated smoking areas.
Cigarette butts must be disposed of safely in the containers or ashtrays provided in these areas.

The ‘Central Patient Management’ (ZPM) is the point of contact for patients who are either scheduled for inpatient admission to the Husum Clinic in the following departments or who are scheduled for outpatient or inpatient surgery/intervention:
The ZPM coordinates the appointments for the pre-operative consultation for these patients and takes care of the procedures for admission to the ward or for outpatient surgery/intervention.

When bringing food and drinks, any dietary restrictions should be taken into account and only brought in after consultation with the ward doctor or nursing staff. Flower gifts should be small in size. Potted flowers are not permitted due to the risk of infection.
The nursing staff will be happy to help you arrange for a hairdresser to visit you on the ward. The hairdresser's services must be paid for separately.
You will find disinfection dispensers in all rooms, in the corridors, at the entrances to the wards and at the main and side entrances to the clinic. Please use these frequently, e.g. when entering or leaving the ward. Please also ask your visitors to disinfect their hands when arriving and leaving. Good hand disinfection protects you, your visitors and our staff much better against infections!
When you are admitted to our hospital or receive treatment at the RGZ Tönning, we undertake to help you restore your health and make your stay with us as pleasant as possible. However, we need your help to do this. We have compiled various guidelines in our house rules to ensure that your stay with us runs smoothly.
Particular attention is paid to compliance with hygiene guidelines, which are monitored by specially trained staff. Hygiene and disinfection plans are in place for all areas. All staff are particularly vigilant with infectious patients, who are routinely accommodated separately to protect fellow patients from infection.
The doctors at the clinics will provide you with comprehensive information about your illness and treatment. If you still have questions after these discussions, please do not hesitate to ask for additional information that you can understand so that you feel sufficiently informed.
Free WiFi internet access is available for patients on the wards. You will receive an access code at the patient admission desk, which is valid for 7 days.
In addition to the clinics' own emergency rooms, the Husum and Niebüll clinics each have an emergency practice run by the SH Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians. This emergency practice is open outside the regular consultation hours of the region's registered doctors and has taken over their on-call service. If you are unable to visit this practice, please call 116 117.
Illness, accident or old age can leave us all in a situation where we are no longer able to make decisions for ourselves. If, in certain medical situations, you do not want any or only limited treatment measures that are primarily intended to prolong life artificially, you should submit a corresponding (living) will that provides the attending physicians with the relevant information.
More information on living wills, as well as on powers of attorney and guardianship orders, and helpful wording suggestions can be found on the website of the Federal Ministry of Justice.
Our service staff on the wards go through the rooms every morning to take your meal orders for the following day.
When you are admitted to one of our clinics, you are entitled to full board. We provide tasty, healthy and varied meals prepared in accordance with medical and nutritional guidelines to support your recovery process.
The medical device safety officer is responsible for all questions relating to the Technical functionality and safety of the medical devices used at Klinikum Nordfriesland.
Support your healing process by following the doctor's instructions and taking the prescribed medication on time and in the correct dosage. If, contrary to expectations, side effects occur, please inform the attending doctor or a member of the nursing staff immediately. Any medication you have brought with you should only be taken after consultation with the attending doctor at the hospital. Otherwise, side effects may occur!
Inpatient stays in our clinics are usually covered by your health insurance. For these services, you only have to pay the co-payments stipulated by law.
In addition, you can choose additional services to round off your hospital stay. These include the optional services ‘doctor’, “room” and ‘meals’.
However, these optional services are only covered by (supplementary) insurance if you have taken out a policy for these services! Please clarify this issue before concluding any contracts with us. If you are not adequately insured, you will have to bear the costs of the agreed optional services yourself! Please note this. Paid parking spaces are available for visitors and patients at the Husum and Niebüll clinics. Parking at the RGZ Tönning is free of charge.
The main entrance areas are for getting in and out of vehicles only – not for parking. The access roads to the clinics must be kept clear at all times for fire brigade and emergency services vehicles. Vehicles may only be parked in designated parking areas on the clinic grounds. This also applies to the RGZ Tönning.
Hospital chaplains offer support to all patients in difficult emotional and psychological situations. They will be happy to visit you in your patient room if required, after referral by the nursing staff. Pastoral care is available to all people in hospitals, regardless of their religious affiliation.
In addition, the clinics are usually visited once a week by pastoral carers from the surrounding communities. If you would like a visit from a pastoral carer, please inform the nursing staff.
The Husum Clinic has a patient café called ‘Café Düneneck’ in the entrance hall on the ground floor. It sells fruit, magazines, small gifts, sweets and toiletries, as well as small snacks, cakes and hot and cold drinks. Outside the opening hours of Café Düneneck, drinks and snack vending machines are available in the entrance hall.
At the Niebüll Clinic, there is a “Klönstuuv” in the entrance area where patients and visitors can relax. Drinks and snack vending machines are available there.
Patient ombudsmen have set themselves the task of helping patients who have cause for complaint. They aim to educate, advise and represent their interests. They also seek to mediate between patients and doctors and other healthcare institutions and to identify ways in which patients can be helped. The ombudsmen operate nationwide. You will receive any post addressed to you via the nursing staff. Within the clinic, post is easier to deliver if the address includes the name of the ward where you are staying. Please hand in outgoing letters at the information desk in the clinics or to the nursing staff. Stamps can be purchased at the kiosks in Husum and Niebüll.

Quality management and patient safety are top priorities at the Nordfriesland Clinic facilities. Organisational and treatment procedures are laid down in procedural instructions and manuals. Certifications from individual centres (e.g. Adipositas-Zentrum Nord or the trauma centres) serve as proof of quality. The hospital has already achieved a great deal in the area of patient safety: from the introduction of patient wristbands to prevent mix-ups, to measures for pressure ulcer and fall prevention, to the introduction of a reporting system for ‘near misses’, as is known from aviation.
For your own benefit and that of your fellow patients, we ask that you observe the quiet hours in the building: 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. onwards.
At the Husum Clinic, there is a ‘quiet room’ on the second floor; at the Niebüll Clinic, it is on the fifth floor. These quiet rooms serve as a place of retreat for our patients, visitors and staff, where they can reflect on their experiences in peace and quiet. They are intended as safe havens for the soul. They can be visited by anyone, regardless of their religious denomination.

Smoking is strictly prohibited in all buildings of the Nordfriesland Hospital and on the hospital grounds! This also applies to e-cigarettes.
Smoking is only permitted in specially marked and designated smoking areas on the outdoor grounds. There is a smoking pavilion available in both Husum and Niebüll. Out of consideration for others, smoking is also not permitted in front of the main entrances or side entrances.

The social services at the Husum and Niebüll clinics can assist you and your relatives with a wide range of specific issues, e.g.
The social services department puts you in touch with advice centres, self-help groups and official institutions, and provides information and advice on claiming benefits that are regulated by law. Please contact the nursing staff, who will be happy to put you in touch. At the Inselklinik Föhr-Amrum, please contact your attending physician if you have any questions about home care, short-term care, domestic help, moving to a retirement home, follow-up treatments, or contacts to advice centres, self-help groups or official institutions. They will try to help you.
If your health permits, you may stay outside your hospital room in the ward, in the common areas or in the entrance hall. If you leave the ward, we ask that you wear appropriate clothing and briefly inform the nursing staff where you can be found. We ask that you remain in your room during doctors' rounds, treatment times and mealtimes.
There are permanently installed televisions in the patient rooms. Use of these is free of charge for patients. You can listen to the sound of the programme currently being shown via the headphones at your bedside.
To make the transition from hospital to home easier for you, we offer you further assistance as part of our transition management programme, which we have set up in collaboration with the Krämer medical supply store and the nationwide specialist Sanimed. We recommend that you bring only a small amount of cash and no valuables with you to the hospital. Mini safes are available in some wards for the safe storage of your valuables. Otherwise, you can leave your valuables with the patient administration department in exchange for a receipt. Your nursing staff will be happy to assist you with this.

Please note that visiting hours are between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. We ask for your understanding that visitors must leave the patient's room during nursing or medical procedures for reasons of discretion.
